Merging with the computer

As a student of the Almaas’s Diamond Heart school I am used to keep in the background of my soul a sort of Socratic psycho-spiritual inquiry that I used to practice in that school. As a student of the Almaas’s Diamond Heart school I am used to keep in the background of my soul a sort of Socratic psycho-spiritual inquiry that I used to practice in that school. So even when I am in front of the computer I ask myself what is the deeper need that this tool tries to fulfil.

Almaas’ books and models of the soul introduce psychological and spiritual knowledge in a unique way for the west, harmonizing the once split fields of psychology (that works mainly on ego integration in life) and spirituality (that works mainly on going beyond the ego toward our essential qualities and the connection with the absolute).

The name itself personal computer conveys an exclusive, unique and intimate relationship between the user and the media. We don’t call our car or our digital camera “personal”. In psychological terms and considering mainly the works of Margaret Mahler and Almaas I would say that the relationship between a user and his computer resembles the symbiotic phase in the relatiosnhip between mother and child, with its sub-phases.

The first sub-phase of the symbiotic stage is what Almaas defines as Merging Love:

This aspect is present from the beginning of life but dominates especially between two and ten months of age. This period of life generally coincides with the period of ego development, called the symbiotic phase by Margaret Mahler… In this state of ego development, the child is not aware of the mother or himself as separate individuals in their own right. The ego has not separated itself. Mother and self are still a unity – a dual unity. In infant observation we find that when the infant experiences the dual unity without any frustration or conflict, his essential state is that of merging love. It is a pleasurable, sweet, melting kind of love. The baby is peaceful, happy and contented. (Essence, pg 92) The melting quality of this aspect of Essence makes one feel merged with the environment, not separate and not differentiated. So it basically melts one’s sense of boundaries. The melting is felt throughout the whole body. (The Pearl Beyond Price, pg 232)

Every heavy computer user, being a technical programmer, an end user that playes with video games, a chat programs user, a user that spend time in social networkering sites as Myspace, a porn addict, somebody who searches for news and information, knows that he can loose the sense of time and enter into an almost altered state of consciousess. Computers have a soothing quality. As the baby with the mother, there is a compulsive quality in merging. The merging quality can be expressed through other means than the computer, perhaps with TV, ideas, drugs but the computer seems to have become a more flexible tool than any other.

The computer gives us the continuous attention that the baby needs from its mother. The computer always answers our requests. We don’t even need to talk just like when we were small babies. We just need to move our fingers in a very delicate way and be aware of our close immediate environment (the screen) through our eyes, as when we were in the cradle. The merging stage between mother and child have been disrupted in recent decades by bottle feeding and earlier day care. When we skip a stage in our biological and soul development we look for ways to correct and restore what our soul is still missing. But the symbiotic phase is not just heaven.

When the infant’s needs are not met adequately or immediately, he cannot but experience frustration, rage and other painful affects. But the infant’s experience of this negativity is not experienced as his own or his mother’s; it is part of a merged relationship. There is still no clear concept of self and other, and no clear boundaries between the two. Thus the frustration and suffering can only be experienced as what we call “negative merging,” in contrast to the positive merging of the experiences of gratification. (Almaas: The Pearl Beyond Price, pg 245) Negative merging is undischarged frustration. And because the frustration is undischarged we lose or fail to develop confidence. This undischarged frustration is nothing but an undischarged blockage on the physical level which reflects the loss of confidence on the mental level. (Almaas: Diamond Heart Book 2, pg 130)

Everybody knows how computers can trigger our frustration and anger when we are interrupted in our activities, when things don’t work as we desire, when the Internet connection is slow or absent, when the person we are chatting with doesn’t answer, when we don’t find the solution to a problem. Then we crave the smooth and sweet original symbiotic phase where everything was being taken care of.

The presence of negative-merging affect in the personality manifests as many kinds of desires. Since it is a state of painful undischarged tension, the desires are ultimately for discharge, though the objects of desire will vary greatly. And since only Being is a Presence without negative-merging affect, then our ultimate desire must be for realizing Being. (The Pearl Beyond Price, p 258)

The feeling of undischarged tension is quite common with computer users. So how can this tense frustration be discharged in front of the computer? In absence of a healthier discharge through the body, as bioenergetic practitioners know, the net redirects desires and offers many surrogates for the discharge: porn, bloody video games, the mindy “aha i got it” discharge effect when we find the information we were seeking or a solution to the problem we were looking for. But all of those discharges are prone to trigger an addictive effect and are by nature short lived.

Going a bit further in the ego development phases, we enter into the separation-individuation phase.

Separation-Individuation: Mahler refers to this phase as the symbiotic phase which, at its peak, gives way to separation-individuation and its sub-phases. The symbiotic phase serves as a platform upon which the child’s internal resources and capacities are assembled, coordinated, repeatedly tested and finely-tuned within a stable and secure orbit before the outer reaches of separation and autonomy can be sampled. (from http://www.margaretmahler.org/)

The separation-individuation phase is characterized by the first tentative steps into the world while we still we feel we have the safety net of the mother’s care at any time. Hardly anyone remembers when the personal computer wasn’t connected to the net and was purely an exclusive merging object with nobody else at the other end of the screen. Then in the early nineties, the Internet started a mass diffusion and, in a way, we entered the separation-individuation stage. We can “meet” people, navigate the web, having our mind permeated by many object-relationships, all done at our safe personal desk. The separation-individuation phase gives birth to the rapprochement phase.

The rapprochement subphase of ego development in childhood begins when the child becomes conceptually aware of his separateness from his mother. This coincides with the deflation of his grandeur and omnipotence. He becomes actually aware of his vulnerability and dependence. (Almaas: The Pearl Beyond Price, pg 286)

As in any soul need, any missed or incomplete stage cries out to be completed. Isn’t the computer a way to regain the feeling of our sense of omnipotence, having the whole world and omniscience at our fingertips? But when we aren’t aware of our deepest needs we are prone to trying to fulfill them in unconscious ways, which are only fake and basically an ego simulation of the authentic original quality.

Object Constancy. The separation-individuation process leads ultimately to the development of the ego as a structure. Its final phase is that of object constancy, when the ego is formed and established as a permanent existence, separate from the environment (mother), and other people are seen to have separate existences. Finally, the ego is structured and developed, and the child permanently experiences himself as having a separate identity. (Almaas: Essence, pg 160)

The development of the net is going in a direction that will give more and more “identities”, as fixed IP addresses, personal blogs, avatars, real ID requests in social networking and dating sites. The beautiful maya-illusion capacities of the human mind to recreate simulations of the world are at work more than ever. The more we as human beings are becoming aware of the real nature of the soul, the more more the mind seduces us into creating a simulation of the real.

(A.H. Almaas. Essenza. Il nucleo divino nell’uomo. Crisalide. (The Pearl Beyond Price, pg 232)

(The Pearl Beyond Price, p 258)

(Almaas: The Pearl Beyond Price, pg 286)
