>perhaps there's a great argument that actual evolution in consciousness will occur with those who don't merge with the technology... in that they will be forced to expand consciousness to survive...

Interesting point. In many ways we "outsource" our intelligence and consciousness to technology. This very outsourcing is depriving us of those qualities, as McLuhan said about media as extensions and amputations of ourselves.

I found your posting today after doing a quick google search on Ray K. I wanted to see what the general consensus was in the cyber-world. About two years ago I read The Singularity... or the first few chapters of it anyway, before putting it at the bottom of never-gonna-read-it pile. He gives me the creeps, to be honest.
I really appreciated your take on the subject. I also feel that the evolution of human potential lies in expanded awareness, not expanded technology. And the sort of awareness which comes from an inner study of the subtle... The sum of emotional, psychological, energetic, physical, mental, sexual - and transcendent experiences which are uniquely human... the inner study which one undertakes painstakingly in order to realize Oneness with all that is. I don't believe this will ever be able to be 'uploaded'.
The other aspect which I don't find much written about is that this technology is motivated by 1) contempt for nature. Death is part of the cycle. If no one dies, it's a closed system, right?
2) Competition. Not everyone will be able to afford the same technology - so the disparity between wealthy and poor will increase as exponentially as the technology - and the ones who cannot afford it will be at an extreme disadvantage economically/socially/politically.
But then... hm... perhaps there's a great argument that actual evolution in consciousness will occur with those who don't merge with the technology... in that they will be forced to expand consciousness to survive...

Without even going into religious consideration, I also consider that the view expressed by Kurzweil is very narrow. He only think from a technological perspective, without taking into consideration some facts (the first one being : we don't know how and why we think, and the more research advance, the less it seem understable from a simplist binary view of the world).
Lot of things do not work in the canvas of mathematic logic. Lot of things should not be here. Maybe we should'nt even have gotten to this state. Our potential, as I feel it, is enormous. Maybe limitless. Even if we can't do math as fast as a computer.
We still have a lot to understand about ourselve, about how to act (or not), about why we act. And how to attain a way of enlightnement (be it a spiritual one, or only a better being with ourselves).
