Computers are definitely going wireless. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless modalities of transmitting data through computers and modems, printers and other peripherals are expanding. Towns are installing thousands of wireless antennas in order to have a tight grid of spots where people can access the Internet from any location; in a few years we will wirelessly connecting any high-tech tool with each other and with the Net both at home and outside.

Wireless connection won't be the only information post on the territory. Reality mining is the term coined by MIT Media Lab that sums up the various objects that can be transformed in data spots through tiny radio-connected sensor chips. In the July/August 2007 issue of Technology Review, the main article titled Second Earth lists them as "everything worth monitoring, including bridges, ventilation systems, light fixtures, mousetraps, shipping pallets, battlefield equipment, even the human body".

The appeal of wireless is not just avoiding messy cables or the convenience of being able to connect to the Net anywhere. Wireless spots have an impact on our psyche as well. They give the impression of conscious, almost alive presences spreading across the world. The wireless points suit the Cartesian dream of thoughts without a body, of pure thoughts without a physical medium. In this regard, wireless spot "intelligences" are the logical consequence of the development of our western scientific and technological approach.

At the same time the wireless objects packed with information and software resemble something from the higher levels of a mystical reality where the universe is alive and conscious and where the thought-sphere is everywhere and not confined to the human mind. Reminds a net of infinite eyes and pervasive awareness where all is one and interconnected.

I observed that through our technological achievements humans unconsciously attempt to produce realms that emulate more advanced psychological and spiritual levels of human development, levels that can't be reached by the conceptual mind. What is achieved through technology is a simulation of the mystical conditions of a global mind that pervades the universe. The longing toward rejoining with the global mind is felt by every human being, but when we still identify ourselves with our individual ego and mind, we can't abandon those and be embraced by a wider mind. Nonetheless we unconsciously perceive a faint echo of the spiritual global realms and we construct through technology a simulated reflection of a pervasive conscious universe. This pale reflection on the technological level won't threaten our individual ego, still not ready to melt with the global consciousness.

Mystics always said that thoughts aren't produced by the mind/brain, but that the organ just picks up what's already available in the thought-sphere, as U.G. Krishnamurti says:

Thought is not yours or mine; it is our common inheritance. There is no such thing as your mind and my mind. There is only mind – the totality of all that has been known, felt, and experienced by man, handed from generation to generation. We are all thinking and functioning in that "thought sphere", just as we all share the same atmosphere for breathing. The thoughts are there to function and communicate in this world sanely and intelligently. [...] Where are the thoughts located? They are not in the brain. Thoughts are not manufactured by the brain. It is, rather, that the brain is like an antenna, picking up thoughts on a common wavelength, a common thought-sphere. U.G. Krishnamurti. Mind is a Myth. Dinesh Publications. Goa.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are in this regard a metaphor of global, non localized consciousness: a net of active data that communicate with each other. With our tools we can pick up and filter the information circulated by these sources, in this way feeling connected to the global thought-sphere.

Science considers the brain as the place where thoughts are formed and consciousness is created. Instead, Nisargadatta Maharaj, as many other mystics, experimented first hand the reality of the ocean of consciousness:

You are so accustomed to think of yourselves as bodies having consciousness that you just cannot imagine consciousness as having bodies. Once you realize that bodily existence is but a state of mind, a movement in consciousness, that the ocean of consciousness is infinite and eternal, and that, when in touch with consciousness, you are the witness only, you will be able to withdraw beyond consciousness altogether. While for Nisargadatta Maharaj and other mystics consciousness is the main substance of the universe and bodies are included as part of the global consciousness, for Descartes and current  scientists consciousness is just located in the mind, and bodies are just considered as trouble for pure thoughts. In the mystics' point of view, consciousness is pervasive and can even happen in a body-mind. In Descartes' view bodies and the material world are defined as things of a different nature from consciousness.

Descartes himself had truly a mystical view of life but he had to compromise with the Church of his time so he left to the church the monopoly on faith and conscience. What has been passed on by Descartes wasn't his spirituality but the pillars of the scientific method and the so-called body-mind split.

Since consciousness is ubiquitous I am not surprised that the seat of human consciousness is so elusive to neuroscientists that look for it mainly in the brain.

Non c’è dubbio che in futuro i computer saranno sempre più wireless: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi e altre modalità wireless di trasmissione dei dati attraverso computer, modem, stampanti e altre periferiche si stanno diffondendo. Le città stanno installando migliaia di antenne wireless per creare una griglia fitta di punti in cui la gente possa accedere a Internet: in pochi anni connetteremo senza fili tutti gli strumenti ad alta tecnologia, tra loro e con la Rete, sia a casa che all’esterno.

La comunicazione senza fili non sarà il solo punto informazione sul territorio. Reality mining [estrarre la realtà] è il termine coniato dal Mit Media Lab per indicare i vari oggetti che possono essere trasformati in punti informazione tramite piccoli chip sensoriali radiocollegati. Nel numero di luglio-agosto 2007 della rivista Technology Review, il principale articolo, intitolato Second Earth [Seconda terra] li elenca definendoli “tutto ciò che bisogna monitorare, inclusi ponti, sistemi di ventilazione, impianti luce, trappole per topi, pallet per carico-scarico merci, equipaggiamento di battaglia, persino il corpo umano”.

L’attrattiva del wireless non sta solo nella possibilità di evitare grovigli di fili o di connettersi alla Rete da qualsiasi luogo. I luoghi wireless hanno un impatto anche sulla nostra psiche. Essi creano la sensazione di presenze consce, quasi vive, onnipresenti. I punti wireless realizzano il sogno cartesiano dei pensieri senza corpo, dei puri pensieri senza un medium. Da questa prospettiva, “le intelligenze” di un punto wireless sono il logico risultato dell’evoluzione della nostra mentalità occidentale, scientifica e tecnologica.

Allo stesso tempo, gli oggetti wireless che contengono informazioni e software, assomigliano per certi versi ai livelli di una realtà mistica, dove l’universo è vivo e conscio, e dove la sfera dei pensieri è ovunque, non confinata alla mente umana. Ricorda una rete di occhi infiniti e di consapevolezza onnipresente, dove tutto è uno e interconnesso.

Ho notato che attraverso i progressi tecnologici gli esseri umani cercano inconsapevolmente di produrre realtà che imitino stati psicologici e spirituali più elevati, stati che non possono essere raggiunti dalla mente concettuale. Quella che si raggiunge tramite la tecnologia è una simulazione dello stato mistico di una mente globale che pervade l’universo. Il desiderio di unirsi alla mente globale è avvertito da ogni essere umano, ma se siamo ancora identificati con il nostro ego e con la mente individuale, non riusciamo ad abbandonare questi ultimi per entrare nell’abbraccio di una mente più vasta. Ciononostante, percepiamo una debole eco delle dimensioni spirituali globali e attraverso la tecnologia costruiamo un simil-riflesso di un universo conscio onnipresente. Tale pallido riflesso a livello tecnologico non minaccia il nostro ego individuale, che ancora non è pronto a fondersi con la consapevolezza globale.

I mistici hanno sempre affermato che i pensieri non sono prodotti dalla mente/cervello: questo organo non fa che raccogliere ciò che è già presente nella sfera dei pensieri. Come dice U. G. Krishnamurti:

Non esiste la vostra mente o la mia mente: c'è solo la Mente, che è la totalità di tutte le sensazioni, di tutta la conoscenza, di tutta l'esperienza che il genere umano ha accumulato di generazione in generazione. Tutti noi pensiamo e funzioniamo in una sfera di pensiero, esattamente come tutti quanti abbiamo in comune la stessa atmosfera per respirare. I pensieri ci sono per poter funzionare e comunicare in questo modo corretto e intelligente. [...] Dove si trovano i pensieri? Non sono nel cervello. I pensieri non sono fabbricati dal cervello. Si può dire, piuttostom che il cervello funziona come un'antenna che capta i pensieri da una sfera comune a tutti, su determinate lunghezze d'onda. U.G. Krishnamurti. Il Bluetooth e il Wi-Fi in questo senso sono una metafora della consapevolezza globale e non localizzata: una rete di dati attivi che comunicano tra loro. Con i nostri strumenti possiamo raccogliere e filtrare le informazioni messe in circolo da queste fonti, sentendoci in tal modo connessi con la sfera globale dei pensieri. La scienza considera il cervello come il luogo in cui si formano i pensieri e si crea la consapevolezza. Nisargadatta Maharaj, invece, come molti altri mistici, ha vissuto in prima persona la realtà dell’oceano di consapevolezza.

Voi siete talmente abituati a pensarvi come corpi muniti di coscienza che non riuscite a immaginare una coscienza dotata di diversi corpi. Quando avrai realizzato che l'esistenza corporea è solo uno stato mentale, un movimento nella coscienza, che l'oceano della coscienza è infinito ed eterno, e che quando entri in contatto con la coscienza sei soltanto un testimone, sarai in grado di ritirarti interamente al di là della coscienza stessa. Mentre per Nisargadatta Maharaj e altri mistici la consapevolezza è la sostanza fondamentale dell’universo, e i corpi fanno parte di essa, per Cartesio e gli scienziati contemporanei la consapevolezza è semplicemente contenuta nella mente, e i corpi non sono considerati altro che un ostacolo per i pensieri puri. Secondo il punto di vista dei mistici, la consapevolezza è onnipresente e può anche accadere in un corpo-mente; secondo la concezione di Cartesio, i corpi e il mondo materiale sono definiti come entità di natura distinta dalla consapevolezza.

Cartesio aveva in realtà una concezione mistica della vita, ma dovette scendere a compromessi con la Chiesa del suo tempo, per cui lasciò a essa il monopolio sulla fede e la coscienza. Quello che ci è stato tramandato di Cartesio non è stata la sua spiritualità, ma i pilastri del metodo scientifico e la cosiddetta scissione corpo-mente.

Poiché la consapevolezza è onnipresente, non mi sorprende che la sede della consapevolezza umana risulti così sfuggente ai neuroscienziati che la cercano soprattutto nel cervello.
