Oh yes and than orgasms should of course be simultaneous.
Orgasms haven’t moved much from the space they always had in our psyche.

There are many good reasons for saying that orgasms are good. They feel good. When a person has an orgasm with a partner, they trust the partner enough to release their control for a while and be taken over by an overwhelming energy.

Orgasms make us vulnerable; they show our intensity and we can let the other hear our deepest screams of pleasure. As a man, it’s beautiful to see and feel the shakti energy of a woman as she has an orgasm. Orgasms trigger the release of many hormones, among them oxytocin that induces feelings of love and bonding. They are good for health and circulation; they can start in the body but expands to the soul, or vice versa, representing a holistic experience for the person. Everybody could list more benefits for themselves.

But… Having “ordinary” orgasms seems not to be enough anymore. Clitoral orgasm is just for beginners. G-spot orgasm, trigasm, multiple orgasms and squirting are all musts now for a woman. Men usually don’t have any problem reaching an orgasm so the frontier for them is to become multi-orgasmic; having a 30-minute orgasm or reaching a prostate orgasm. Oh yes and than orgasms should of course be simultaneous.

I have always loved to experiment and to share intimately and deeply with a partner. However, up until a few years ago, when there wasn’t yet any definition of those different kinds of orgasms, we just felt free to experiment with our bodies and sensations in a playful and passionate way. We were moving from one position to another and from one sensation to another, guided by the gods Eros and Aphrodite.

Now we are required to look for those kinds of orgasms, define and maybe even count them. “Honey did you get that g-spot squirt or was the air-conditioner spilling water”? Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health and other magazines are efficient in telling readers the hot sex trends and the tips that can transform everybody into Gods and Goddesses in the bedroom. That sells!

Nevertheless, if we don’t let our controlling mind relax and if we don’t surrender every goal while having sex, we can’t reach deeper states. There are experiences in life for example: meditation, falling asleep, even defecating or becoming spiritually enlightened, that happen more easily when we are not overly interfering as personalities with goals, when we just let ourselves go. Every woman knows that the harder she tries to have an orgasm more difficult it becomes.

Of course, orgasms can be sparked mechanically as well in many ways. Sex toys are there for that. Nothing wrong with a couple “work-out” orgasm or with sex toys, they can be lot of fun and a great way to get to know our bodies. However, the bliss of being open to Eros is mostly a receptive experience that is being transformed in our culture into a goal-oriented “have to”. Eros can’t guide and transport us anymore, we want to be guided by the how-to’s, as if sex was a technical manual.

Orgasms haven’t moved much from the space they always had in our psyche. In the past (and in part nowadays too) they were confined to the controlling superego in the forms of prohibitions, inhibitions and judgments; now they are still in the judging superego, they just disguised themselves as “have-to”, “the right kind”, “how many”.
I can predict that more new orgasms will be “discovered”: the mind orgasm (then the various brain areas will be more precisely distinguished from each other), the emotional orgasm, the chakra orgasm, probably somebody will write books about it all and will organize workshops. What about “discovering” a DNA orgasm?

In my experience, I can recall that among the best sexual experiences that I had, the presence of having an orgasm wasn’t the main ingredient. I remember a lover that had multiple orgasms while we had sex. So I was puzzled at the beginning when she told me that the best sex she ever had in her life was when we explored our sensuality in a way that didn’t bring her any big O, and not even penetration. I realized then how much emphasis we misguidedly give to orgasm.

Why do we give such importance to climax? One obvious reason is that it feels good but I think there are two main ingredients in how the collective mind works: one is the obsession to finish, to complete, to have a goal. This is a hard obsession that has its roots much deeper than the inception of the industrial age and that will be the subject of a future, longer article.

The second ingredient is, paradoxically, religious. For the Christians, sex is for reproduction, and for this to happen, at least the man needs to climax. Women’s orgasms have been ignored for long time and it is good that female orgams have come out of the closet. However, the masculine need to reach an orgasm and to have a goal have been exported to the other gender without being integrated with other dimensions. Even though most people nowadays consider sex as something that is more an emotional and pleasure-oriented connection than about having babies, the importance of the orgasm tells us that the unconscious association between sex and reproduction is still influencing our approach to sex.

During these very hot days in Italy a lightweight article about media and gender relationships. Marshall McLuhan as a media analyst coined the terms hot and cool media.

Hot media are those media that express an analytical, precise and well-defined message. Most of the visual media, especially the high-definitions one, are hot media. The message conveyed by hot media usually doesn't need much participation from the audience. For instance a movie is hotter than television since has a higher definition. Other examples of hot media are radio, the photograph, a lecture.

Cool media are those media that need the participation of the audience. Comic books and cartoons are cool media since the audience has to fill missing details. A seminar is considered a cool media since it requires an active role of the participants.

[/en][it]

[/it] [en]

McLuhan associated hot media with the industrial and individualist societies and cool media with the oral, village and tribal societies.

Cinema for instance is more "hot" and individualistic than television, because the audience is not supposed not to communicate among themselves in a movie theater. It is more compatible with a detached attitude, present in our individualistic society. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, by director Giuseppe Tornatore (1988), narrates the arrival of a movie theater in Sicily in the 50's, where the hot-blooded Sicilians react to the movie scenes with shouting and standing up. They are used to engage, not to be detached spectators.

I have some doubts around this classification of hot and cool media, and I would like to see many more parameters involved in the media analysis; nonetheless, it is valuable for increasing our awareness of the impact of media.

If a medium is less defined, there is going to be more audience participation in the message. However, what do we really do when we complete the message of a cool media? We immerse ourselves in the media and can became almost hypnotized looking for instance at television or reading comics books. This "effort" to complete is mostly done in a passive effortless way. We enter an almost dreamy state where our attention is not consciously there, but nonetheless our minds are comparing what we see with our complex world of projections, structures, wishes. As McLuhan noticed, with any media we are on one side extending our possibilities and on the other side numbing and amputating the equivalent characteristic in ourselves. In Understanding Media, McLuhan wrote, "Self-amputation forbids self-recognition."

For instance, the car as a medium extends the limited possibilities of our legs; at the same time represents a loss of the legs muscles and the disappearance of the walking culture, transforming our towns into spaces no longer suitable for walking.

Women know well that less is more. Showing a part of their bodies makes the seer activate his imagination to complete the picture (well, in this case completing could mean… completing the removal). Lingerie is a typical "cool" medium. A club where women show sexy clothes is probably more exciting than a nudist beach. Perfect make-up on a woman is for me about as sexy as a plastic Barbie doll. Cover models on magazines never fascinated me. However, the spark of a spontaneous glance can trigger a cascade of feelings.

A low-resolution video makes us more involved than a high definition one. The challenges for porn producers about HDTV are not because the better resolution can show flaws in the actor's bodies, but the real threat comes from the better definition in itself that allows less participation on the side of the audience. Actors can probably avoid expensive and painful surgeries to fix little imperfections.

If seeing less is more participatory, saying less gives space to our wishes and hopes in making a picture of the other person. Women often prefer to communicate in a "cool media" manner, with less hard-defined statements and more first person subjectivity. Men in general are more inclined toward rational, objective, hot media messages, both verbally and visually. I use "women" and "man" as I'd use "jin" and "yang". It's more an energetic quality than a gender issue, even though often it overlaps with genders.

Women are considered better human communicators in particular on emotional issues, since the other person feels more willing to enter and be engaged. On the other side, this gives more space to projections and misunderstandings and to a numbing effect that is probably necessary to fall in love. Seducers know that giving hints is more effective than giving clear statements.Too, talking about love in a "hot media" way, well defined and rational, could be as well a defence mechanism against real participation.

There is a saying: "Try to reason about love and you will lose your reason." This doesn't mean that our awareness shouldn't be present in love; the best modality is probably a mix of cool and hot media language where both precise hot definition messages are well mixed with less defined cool messages. Many misunderstandings happen when somebody answers his partner with a different temperature modality.

[/en][it]

The technological society permeates more and more every part of our life and we are downloading more and more parts of our real life onto the Net. Personal communications, finance, work, news, work, dating, shopping are just few of the activities that have been moved massively to the Net. Those are separate areas of our life where we usually apply different modalities of our mind.

Our attitude is different when we are at work, when we are shopping, when we talk to a friend or when we are communicating with somebody we are attracted to in a sensuous and intimate way. In addition, we usually have different settings for the different range of life activities. As we activate different parts of our mind, our body is involved as well. On the other hand, when we are stuck in front of a screen, our setting is always the same and the dynamic and tactile experience is missing.

[/en][it]

[/it]

[en]

When we are online we are forced to use almost always the same mind channels to interact with the computer. It doesn't really matter what we are doing online; as McLuhan's famous phrase "The medium is the message" teaches, what counts is the medium itself, not the actual content. Internet directs our mind toward a fast, rational and efficient attitude in which our bodies are not involved, regardless of the actual activity we are doing. Using the same mind modality for dating, shopping, communicating with friends or researching for a scientific paper impoverishes most of these activities. Also, our attention is mostly split since every activity is just a window in the screen and becomes a separate window in our consciousness. Often a restless attitude is present, and a difficulty in keeping ones attention focused on a single task for long time.

A fast, rational and efficient mind is mostly developed during the teenage years, both for biological and developmental psychology reasons. But it is not limited to teenagers. The way we interact with the computer easily allows some of the psychological defence mechanisms to develop, in particular intellectualization, dissociation and splitting. Those defences are activated when the ego is feeling threatened and can also be seen as a protection toward the re-emerging of the less familiar irrational and magical states experienced during adolescence and in difficult changing stages in adult life. Those irrational modalities can be a source of creativity and an enrichment of our soul, but the acceptance of those parts of our psyche are slow and require an integrated and mature ego. The need to keep everything in order is most felt during childhood where children need well-defined situations around them. Gianni Zanarini expressed his insights on pre-logical thoughts and computer users in his book L'emozione di pensare (CLUP-CLUED. Milano. 1985) "The emotions of thinking" and I personally benefited from it when I met him while I was a bachelor student in computer science. I have always been eager to understand the split in our society between the brilliant, clear and directed apollonian mind and the instinctive, sensuous dionysian ways. I love and need them both.

The fast pace of computer communication, coupled with the overwhelming flood of information that is going on at the same time, makes it difficult if not impossible to focus internally, no matter what we are doing. The distractions are endless and even when we are not distracted by external stimuli, our mind is already wired in a way that we crave distractions. The level of excitement has to continually intensified to feed the parts of our mind that crave novelties and excitement, in a purely addictive way. The mind always wants more and more, faster and faster and is never satisfied. I wonder if this "natural" attitude of the mind hasn’t always been taken advantage of by ideologies, religions and by the technological society. All of them promise the ultimate satisfaction, in terms of "when we'll have a better society" by political ideologies, by "if you'll behave well you'll be rewarded with eternal life" by religions or by promising gadgets by technology that will endlessly entertain us and free us from effort and pain. There is a message about salvation in all of them, in a way they are all religions.

The mind has its own complete technology of restlessness. Because running without a purpose is not possible, the mind creates causes or purposes to validate its running. These are called desires. The mind says, "I desire that thing, so I will run after it." How can you run if you have no desire to achieve something in the future, or if there is no goal to reach? Therefore every day the mind decides to fulfil a particular goal in the future. Then the running begins, but by the time the goal is reached, it is found to be useless because it was all merely an excuse for the mind to run. The goal which is reached becomes worthless on fulfillment. Then the mind seeks out another excuse, another goal to be achieved. After reaching that goal it will say, "There is no substance in this. Now I should try for that objective…" So it continues running, further and further. This is why the mind is always projected into the future. It can never be in the present. Osho. The Heartbeat of the Absolute.
As a society we have identified our higher faculties with the work of the mind, and specifically with the productive efficient mind; but the mind in itself, as every spiritual teacher knows, is but a little part of our soul and is basically insubstantial since was constructed by our cultural conditionings and by the various messages we have received in life. The mind is in itself goal oriented and restless. The good news is that we are not just the mind as we know it even though few people would recognize that in our society at this time.

[en]

Everybody gets some inflammation in his or her body. Sinusitis is quite common, as are bronchitis, tendinitis and other “i’ itis’s”. External attacks, as a sudden change of weather, bad food, carelessness, stress or too much effort, can trigger some unbalance in our bodies. Human beings are not perfect. If the inflammation episode does not repeat itself often and it does not become chronic, in most of the cases it will resolve itself spontaneously after few days. No need for special cares but occasionally, some natural treatments or chemical support might be necessary. However, once the symptoms are gone, we can stop the treatment and we use the experience to learn how to take better care of our bodies. Of course, nobody would take painkillers or antibiotics for a year after a complaint is already over.

Nevertheless, when the mind is involved, this is considered a special case. I have a friend in her early 40s, a teacher at university, who is a brilliant and emotionally alive woman. Almost one year ago, she experienced an acute mental episode triggered by a problematic relationship with her lover.

[/en][it]

[/it]

[en]
Her strong longing for him released a chain of thoughts and images that went out of control. She doesn’t use drugs and never had any mental episode before. Her personality is bubbly and extrovert; probably a different personality would have reacted by slipping into a depressive state, instead her mind went up to the ceiling and beyond.

Intellectual people that work mainly with their mind, are prone to getting an inflammation of the thoughts, I could define it as a minditis, just as sculptors are more prone to forearm tendinitis. Our strength is also our weakness. With tendinitis, the prognosis is simple: rest, anti-inflammatories if needed and taking care not to over-strain that body part in the future. Her sister took my friend to the hospital, where doctors gave her tranquilizers and antipsychotics. I heard about her adventure when I called her on the phone, a couple of weeks after it happened. She was still in the hospital, and the prognosis was that she needed to stay two months in the hospital and take antipsychotic drugs for a year. On the phone, she was the same as ever, just slowed down in her speech and thoughts by the drugs. However, she was aware of herself and balanced in how she talked. But also, she was scared that if she didn’t follow the doctor’s indications, she would fall back into the same condition. Therefore, she took their advice. I feel she is strong enough not to become addicted to those drugs and that will get her life spirit back with no more fears in a short time.

The belief upheld within the psychiatric system is that when somebody has a mental episode, even temporary, something is deeply wrong in the person that has to be “fixed” or at least suppressed by drugs. The pharmaceutical industry has its economic reasons to create long-term dependency among patients.

Probably there are psychological reasons that could be at the base of such an intense longing that triggered a temporary “psychotic” state, and they could be worth exploring. However, a psychological analysis of the event, even though better than the merely pharmaceutical solution, is in my opinion not even the main point. The madness of love that my friend experienced was called divine madness in the past. Intense love and longing are by their very nature going to threaten our balance and our personality. The gods of love and passion cannot do their work if our personality remains intact. “Melting in love,” means exactly that. Jung used to say the gods became diseases. We consider the strong presence of the archetypes as something to be treated and it is considered a threat to our efficient and productive life style.

When I was nineteen, I experienced a depressive episode that lasted for a few months. Anybody that had such an episode knows how painful it can be. I didn’t have any special reason to become depressed, perhaps just a soul’s growth crisis at the end of the teenage years, combined with changes in life. I think that our mind in certain stages of our life goes through a spontaneous need to metabolize and grow in awareness of our past and conditionings. This can feel as uncomfortable as undigested food in the stomach and can take many forms.

My mind was crunching thoughts day and night. In those days, I didn’t know anything about meditation, bodywork or being a witness to the thoughts and let them pass without identifying or attaching to them and letting them chain me in endless circles. The depression ended as suddenly as it started. Life called me again in the form of a dream where I was making love with a girl that I was much attracted to on January 2, a beginning in many senses. From that morning, I got better. Since then I never entered such a depressed state in my life. Since I have occasionally experienced sadness as every human being does, I was worried that it could grow into a major depression; later, after learning to accept occasional sadness as part of human life, my worries disappeared.

During my depressive state, there was a place in my soul that was convinced that nothing could help me. Doctors would have said that a thought like that was a consequence of the depressive state and that I would have needed medical treatment. My awareness of that state, far from being just a negative thought caused by depression, was coming from a deeper part of my soul that knew the depressive state had to follow its course. Not every depression can have this lucky outcome and I acknowledge the importance of having pharmaceutical molecules that can let people run a less painful life and prevent them in extreme cases from committing suicide. The alarming fact is that every day more and more natural psychological and emotional are getting the “pathology” label. I am quite sure that if I was a kid nowadays, I would have been diagnosed with the Attention Deficit Desorder, when in fact I was just extremely alive. Sure, I was easily bored too, but only when my environment could not stimulate my inquiring and challenging mind as I needed. Most people were and still are zombies.

In the self-discovery of my spiritual path, I witnessed several emotionally charged experiences in people, and in myself, that could have been labelled pathological by the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). When those experiences take place in a protected and sympathetic environment, the outcome is healing and a growth of more integrated states in the person experiencing them. However, for this to happen, our full awareness has to be there and this is exactly what is being prevented by psychoactive drugs.

“No ordinary states of consciousness make it possible for unconscious material with strong emotional charge to emerge into consciousness. This is an expression of a powerful spontaneous healing potential and it should be supported. Under such circumstances, emotional and psychosomatic symptoms are not only the problems to be combated but also indications of a healing effort by the organism that has to be supported, encouraged and brought to completion.” (Grof and Grof, 1990)

[/en][it]

Eros was the ancient Greek God of lust and desire. Eros is an essential part of the human experiences that has been redirected and often repressed by religions and societies. Our present-day society is probably more permeated by sexual messages than any other ages in our history and the trend is just on the rise, but Eros is yawning.

[/en][it]

[/it] [en]

There were societies of the past where sexuality was accepted (ancient Rome, the libertines) but it was limited to a part of society. The difference is that sexual messages now are present in every corner of society. Porn on the Internet is pervasive; advertisers use sexual images to promote no matter what kind of product. Popular magazines challenge each other on who tells more "secret pleasurable spots" and "great tricks to become a sex God/Goddess". At the same time we miss Eros in our everyday life.

Eros is not just about lust but everything connected to the senses; often being present with Aphrodite, which suggests us to merge with beauty and desire. One of the obvious missing erotic connections in towns is the erotic merging quality that nature can give in terms of landscapes, smells, variety, body sensations. We limit Eros on the erotic pull between genders and we allow even that just only in certain ways. The more this erotic pull is stimulated and stressed by the media, the more everyday sensual connection between genders is filtered by social norms that prevent the spontaneous eroticism flowing among people.

Apart from the couple life and from out-of-sight places where erotic energy is accepted, the flowing of erotic energy is seen by most people with suspicious or even threatening eyes. In the United States a person can even be sued for sexual harassment if he does compliment a woman. Original, unmediated Eros is chaotic, overwhelming and challenging our identity. Erotic energy and erotic longing can even bring us to the ego dissolving bhakti, the path of devotion, threatening our established personalities as every intense lover knows. As it is overwhelming, Eros can enter in our society only in a surrogate way. When Eros is not present in everyday life, the only way it can sneak in is in its surrogate forms that are not completely accepted but are in some way safer, as sexual images and porn, which are not much more than a tension releaser.

Real Eros between genders and in all its forms is against our productive and competitive society. Eros is freely available and needs no tangible products. It is a help for neurosis and gives the internal fire a direction that prevents unhealthy aggressiveness as Wilhelm Reich told us. Eros' kind of aggressiveness connects people whilst wars separate them. Despite the sexual revolution of few decades ago, we haven't yet integrate or accepted Eros in his authentic form and therefore it is revolutionary today as it has always been.

[/en][it]
