Metabolizing information

The speed of e-contacts and communication prevents the full assimilation of the messages we receive. Split and fragmentary attention has become the rule for online activities, but this procedure is gradually being exported offline. But the time needed for soul maturity goes much slower than electronics.

When we are not present with our aware attention, we are only passive containers of every message we receive. In this way, we are at risk of becoming simple consumers of messages which play on a banal emotional immediacy bypassing any kind of critical analysis.

The speed of e-contacts and communication prevents the full assimilation of the messages we receive. Exactly like our internal organs need enzymes to be able to digest food, our psyche, needs the enzymes provided by our attention and our awareness in order to grow and integrate its own qualities with to reach a deeper understanding. We achieve inner growth when we re-cognise and are aware of ourselves, when the impact of our outward experiences on our psyche lead us to a sharp observation of what is happening on the inside.

An experience, lived in a rushed and unaware manner does not consciously transform our soul, but that does not mean that it does not have an impact on us. It lodges in us like “undigested food” in the shape of conditionings which we will mechanically reproduce without even knowing where they came from. Psychology says that children, who do not yet have a well defined personality and the awareness and deliberation tools of an adult, mechanically repeat what they have experienced and drag along the conditionings suffered so far to adult age. However, even adults can be conditioned, so much that subliminal messages, where our conscious attention is not present, have a much bigger effect on us than the plain, evident ones.

Online experience is characterised by a great number of simultaneous messages and information, by a large quantity of windows and processes all running at once. The quantity of information we receive at the same time is only limited by the computer memory capacity and the speed of connection to the Web, so it tends to expand proportionally to technological developments. We can open more and more windows, run more simultaneous processes, have more and more activities to give our attention to.

Split and fragmentary attention has become the rule for online activities, but this procedure is gradually being exported offline. When we only give partial attention, which shifts constantly from one thing to the next, in reality we are never truly anywhere. The mind cannot give its attention to more than one thing at once; multitasking means, as it means for computer processors, to jump from one activity to the next. But, as opposed to a computer processor, which can really jump from one activity to the next in milliseconds, biological times are much slower.

When we find ourselves online lost in various activities, after a while we feel as if we had achieved nothing because nothing has delved in as deeply as an inner experience, everything has remained on the superficial plane of mental chit-chat.

The fundamental difference lies in the fact that a machine does not need awareness or of a psyche that grows with experience. The time needed for soul maturity goes much slower than electronics; for the psyche to be deeply touched by something, it is necessary to stay with an experience for a certain time; it is necessary for it to feel it, accept it, to expand our awareness not only to the mental processes associated to it, but also to the body, sensations and emotions connected to it. For the psyche to grow we need to water it with awareness and attention.

A society where individuals have an attention that is, to say the least, fragmented, hinders deep analysis and complex thought let alone soul growth. Complex thought, contemplation and wisdom are processes that require prolonged attention. Even intuitive processes and sudden eureka effects only come as a consequence to prolonged attention given to a certain issue.

It is not by chance that any kind of meditation technique entails a long time of concentrated attention. With the weakening of the complex thought and a population that have the attention span of a child, the messages politicians and advertisers give become consistently more immediate and simple.

When we are not present with our aware attention, we are only passive containers of every message we receive. In this way, we are at risk of becoming simple consumers of messages which play on a banal emotional immediacy bypassing any kind of critical analysis.

In other words, if we lose our ability for attention, we become subject to messages that are more and more uncouth and banal, which play on the more undeveloped part of humankind, as it is already happening on the political and media level.
