The heart of the binary code

The computer is a tool that reasons and builds the world in a dualistic attitude. In the computer programming languages used to develop software, one of the main logical structures is the “if-then-else” construct that allows decisions to be made based on choices and dualities. The dualistic binary modality of functioning is typical of the rational thinking mind. The computer as an extension of the mind just mirrors the way the thinking mind works. The ego psychology tells us the structures of the mind itself has been born through the first dualistic event, when in childhood the child begins to split pleasurable-good-love-warm-care sensations from unpleasurable-bad-fear-abandonment-hunger ones.

Everybody knows that computers work with the binary 0-1 code at their core. Even though there are projects to build computers based on neural nets or quantum computers, still none of these have progressed beyond theoretical models. The inner structure of a tool reflects the ways it is used just as the molecular structure of a material reflects the macro features such as weight, texture and resistance.

The computer is a tool that reasons and builds the world in a dualistic attitude. In the computer programming languages used to develop software, one of the main logical structures is the "if-then-else" construct that allows decisions to be made based on choices and dualities.

The dualistic binary modality of functioning is typical of the rational thinking mind. The computer as an extension of the mind just mirrors the way the thinking mind works.

Those are the first mental structures that are born and they are created by splitting our experience. The infant doesn't yet have any concept or a way to understand what is happening around him. But he already has the capacity to have perceptions and sensations. The unifferentiated world of the infant begins to differentiate through those primitive structures, closely connected to physiology. Later on, this dualistic attitude is used for the construction of other and more sophisticated kinds of mental structures.

In the Tibetan tradition the mind itself is defined in those dualistic terms:

That which possesses a sense of duality – which grasps or rejects something external – that is mind. Fundamentally, it is that which can associate with an "other" – with any "something" that is perceived as different from the perceiver. That is the definition of mind. Chogyam Trungpa. The Heart of the Buddha. Shambhala. Boston. 1991

One could say that our mind is not just a mechanical logic-oriented dualistic tool, because we can feel emotions too. But emotions in many spiritual traditions aren't considered to be something beyond the mind, even though we usually separate the two in our perception. The definition of mind in the Tibetan tradition includes what we know as emotions, the most appealing mental states are nonetheless still stuff of the mind. Emotions support the workings of the mind.  Again, Chogyam Trungpa:

Daydreaming and discursive thoughts are not enough. Those alone would be too boring. The dualistic trick would wear too thin. So we tend to create waves of emotions which go up and down: passion, aggression, ignorance, pride – all kinds of emotions." The Heart of the Buddha. Shambhala. Boston. 1991

Therefore emotions support the mind to keep it going on with its separating dualistic work. The computer itself is not any longer a tool that encourages merely a dry rational mind way of functioning, but nowadays provides a lot of food for our emotions through knowledge, connections with people, movies, email, sex sites, music, and so forth.

However, as human beings, we have other cognitive ways. If the mind is the well known organ of thoughts, this is not the only cognitive modality humans have. There is another way, through a "heart", that it doesn't just deal with emotions but has to do with the search of truth and with a direct knowing. The knowing heart is receptive to the intelligence of Being and is guided by Being.

This heart has been considered by spiritual traditions a spiritual entity that has a connection with the body in energetic terms, as for instance through the connection with the heart chakra located in the chest area. However, relatively recently it has been scientifically discovered that the physical heart itself has his own nerve cells that send information to each other and to the brain as well. It is an intrinsic cardiac nervous systems that we still know very little about but it could be discovered to be the physical centre of the subtle knowing capacities. Heartmath people are researching the critical links between emotions, heart-brain communication and cognitive functions. If the mind works with an either/or 0/1 modality, the heart works with an and/and logic, rejoining what the mind separates beyond dualities, even between ourselves as separate individuals and the rest of existence.

The spiritual enlightenment state in some traditions is called the non-dual state, suggesting the end of the splitting dualities of the mind. The heart can be a cognitive tool wider and deeper than the mind. Its wisdom is not the same as the mind’s pursuit of knowledge. The heart’s modalities of knowing don't appear after splitting and reasoning, they come in an intuitive and visionary way, where the less role the ordinary mind takes, the more open space is available to be filled by the truth. A mind emptied of its structures and beliefs gives space to the heart's cognitive faculties.

What is the way to get in touch with that spiritual definition of heart? Through love, as one can imagine, but love of a special lover…

Love of truth for its own sake is actually the expression of essential heart. When one perceives the heart on the Being level, one can recognize that love is the expression of truth. Seeing that a necessary requirement for objectivity, which is usually considered a mental quality, is pure love of truth, which is a heart quality, we observe the organic interrelationship between the various aspects of Essence. It is interesting to remember that the beginning of ego has a defensive character, and defense is nothing but hiding a certain truth of experience. So the requirement for inner realization is the converse of the most basic characteristic of the ego; defense and resistance are the enemies of truth, and love is its ally. The love for truth, which reverses the attitude of defense, leads directly to the truth of experience, the truth that was defended against. A.H. Almaas. The Pearl Beyond Price. Diamond Books. Berkeley. 1988.

The split that created the dualistic mind is a lie constructed at a very early age for the sake of defending the person against intolerable pain. That was a necessary, human and unavoidable lie that has shaped everybody's life. Nonetheless is still a lie that can be exposed and dissolved through the love of truth. The mind can support much of the work toward the truth. But at a certain point it is going to be powerless in searching for deeper truths since its very existence depends on hiding the truth. The heart loves to reveal the layers of the truth which the mind can't investigate.

Rudolf Steiner pointed as well to the unrecognized cognitive faculties of the heart:

The third step in higher knowledge, necessary for rising to Intuition, can be achieved only by developing to its highest point a faculty which, in our materialistic age, is not recognized as a cognitional force. What is revealed through Intuition can be attained only by developing and spiritualizing to the highest degree the capacity for love. A man must be able to make this capacity for love into a cognitional force. Rudolf Steiner. The Evolution of Consciousness. Rudolf Steiner Press. Sussex. 1991

Chogyam Trungpa. The Heart of the Buddha. Shambhala. Boston. 1991

The Heart of the Buddha. Shambhala. Boston. 1991

A.H. Almaas. The Pearl Beyond Price. Diamond Books. Berkeley. 1988.

Rudolf Steiner. The Evolution of Consciousness. Rudolf Steiner Press. Sussex. 1991
