Internet and the weakening of central (inner) organizations

the eye[en]

In the Hindu and tantric Buddhist esoteric traditions, human beings are seen as composed of centers of energy called chakras. Of those, the sixth chakra, called Ajna chakra, is located between the eyes and is often associated with the pineal gland and the “third eye.”

The sixth chakra resonates with an intuitive kind of intelligence, with clear thinking and clear vision. The sixth chakra way of knowing allows one to see the forming of clear patterns in a huge amount of information. This chakra synthesizes many different aspects of intelligence and gives the skill to pick out information about anything by non-logical means.

The sixth chakra world points to a fascinating place where pure knowledge is omnipresent. Descartes would probably have loved to imagine such a place. Anybody heavily involved with information technology as well would enjoy the sixth chakra capacity to see patterns in the information overload and to live in a clear, brilliant place where intuition rules.

The sixth chakra is even more than intelligence as we know it. It is pure knowing, where even thinking is not needed any more. It is also a place where single individualities melt, where there’s nobody who knows and just knowing remains, a place where there’s no separation between inner and outer, between me and you… no more duality. There is a transpersonal flavour about the sixth body.

The sixth chakra is supposed to take charge of the person when the ego, through a spiritual path, doesn’t have the primary role any more. The sixth chakra starts to coordinate the body and the mind from a higher awareness than the ego and one of its names is “the command chakra.” The ego keeps the personality together through a thick net of thoughts, feelings and conditionings that are mostly acquired, while the Ajna chakra gives direct vision, knowledge and action, non-mediated by any past conditionings.

When the conceptual thoughts end their role in driving the evolution of the soul, the Ajna chakra comes into play. Without the ego, the psyche would become schizophrenic if there wasn’t a new coordinating entity. The Ajna chakra binds again what have been melted, but from a higher vision.

Parallel to the chakra model in the esoteric tradition there is a classification in bodies. Human beings are seen as composed of seven bodies: physical, emotional, etheric, mental, spiritual, cosmic, and nirvanic.
Those bodies are like milestones in the self-knowing process, levels where our awareness is most connected to during our spiritual evolution. The fifth body, preceding the sixth, is where the culmination of the individuality and the ego takes place. A strong, defined and sometimes inflexible ego is the fulfillment of the fifth body. The best human qualities are at home in the fifth body as well.

However, the spiritual potentiality does not end with a well-defined personality, however strong, good or bad. Osho talked about the passage from the fifth to the sixth level in The Psychology of the Esoteric (Cologne: Rebel Publishing House):

The fifth body is the richest. It is the culmination of all that is possible for a human being. The fifth is the peak of individuality, the peak of love, of compassion, of everything that is worthwhile. The thorns have been lost. Now, the flower too must be lost. Then there will simply be perfume, no flower. The sixth is the realm of perfume, cosmic perfume. No flower, no center (p. 94).  Up to the fifth, scientific methods can be used, so yoga is helpful. But after that it is meaningless, because yoga is a methodology, a scientific technique.  In the fifth, Zen is very helpful. It is a method to go from the fifth to the sixth (p. 96). Zen has had much appeal in the West because the Western ego is, in a sense, crystallized. In the West, they are the masters of the world; they have everything. But the ego has become crystallized through the wrong process. It has not developed through the transcendence of the first four bodies. So Zen has become appealing to the West but it will not help because the crystallization is wrong (p. 96). If Zen is used before the fifth body you may experience satori, but that is not samadhi. Satori is a false samadhi. It is a glimpse of samadhi, but it is just a glimpse (p. 97).  Labor and effort are necessary; they are needed. But they have a limitation. They are needed up to the fifth body, but they are useless from the fifth to the sixth (p. 98). Up to the fifth you can work and then, from the fifth on, just be aware. Doing is not important then; consciousness is important (p. 100).

The sixth body and the sixth chakra qualities are being simulated and even stimulated by the Internet technology. The sixth chakra ability to pick out information by non-logical means, where we have to rely more on our intuition than on a linear method is manifested in the fast eye scanning of Web pages and information we get on the Internet. We have to grasp the important points and correlations between elements at a glance. Even though search engines like Google try hard to bring order to the huge amount of data, the Net is and will be a non-linear, fuzzy and chaotic place where we find our way in it more by intuition than by logic. Even Google’s results are mostly approached in the same glance-scanning way.

The fact that in the sixth body “doing is not important then; consciousness is important” reminds me of the disembodied online world where we detach from the connection with our bodies to live in a realm of pure information and knowledge. Even the modalities of active thinking, the ones which involve inner concentration and planning, are mostly substituted online by riding the waves of information, flowing from one thing to the other without digging too much in any mental territory. It seems that more than thinking, information pours on us and we sort it quickly and through the very process of sorting we create a thread of information to ride.

As there is also a transpersonal flavor about the sixth body, since the beginning the Internet has often been associated with collectivity more than with individuality. The efforts in creating and spreading information looks like a process of a collective mind. Software is developed by collective efforts, often in the public domain, projects like Wikipedia work on the cooperation between millions of people. Social networks like Facebook or Myspace, even though offering spaces to individuals where they can express themselves, often see their aggregation in identities of loose collective groups. Several cyberculture experts talked about the emergence of a global mind through the Internet, especially during the 90s.

Norbert Wiener, one of the fathers of computer science, said that computers are technologies of “command and control,” as the Ajna chakra is supposed to do.

The sixth chakra can experience its own excesses too. People with an overactive sixth chakra tend to be ungrounded in reality, living in clouds, with difficulties in concentrating. In the extreme, this might trigger paranoid thoughts and hallucinations. When there’s an overload of intuitions or thoughts and there’s no ability to let them go but instead the person becomes attached to them, those tend to clutter the mind. If the sixth chakra is not balanced and rooted by the other chakras, and there’s no connection with the body, the mind becomes clogged.

The Net, in a way, kicks us up to the field of the sixth body, both in the realm of knowledge and in the difficulty of concentrating, but does this by bypassing the other bodies, especially the fifth body of ego construction, which is sometimes seen as “the enemy to defeat” in some people on the spiritual path, but in whose lack we won’t even have the personality qualities needed to go beyond the ego.

We already know, for instance, that the emotional body doesn’t develop well when babies are given to day-care and they get less body contact with the caregivers. Through the Net, the building of a defined ego is not encouraged.

When the West had the strong guidance as well the limiting conditionings of religions and ideologies, the crystallization of the ego took place mainly through ideological, ethical, religious and, of course, through the evergreen familiar conditionings. Some of the messages were in competition with each other, nonetheless, they formed a personality, even though it was often built on ideas sand castles rather than deeper, felt and real human qualities.

The Western ego was largely shaped by the “printing press” culture which advanced human knowledge, understanding and social development greatly. Though this culture also created rigid ideas in the Western mind, it gave the capacity to have a structured and complex kind of thought, deep sense, sustained attention, logical and linear structures and interpretative models of the world.

The ego is, of course, still conditioned by ideologies, religions and science, but in recent years we witnessed the softening of their strength on people. Communism and capitalism aren’t motivating the inner values of good/bad, freedom/dictatorship any more. Both ideologies exposed their limits in driving the human process non to speak of the health of the planet. Religions are showing their darker side regarding intolerance, power, sexual abuse and conflicts. People are losing faith in the messages that come from religions. Even though there’s the phenomenon of fundamentalism, the followers are a very small minority. In the Muslim countries themselves, the secularization process in society is much stronger than fundamentalism, which is actually the reaction to the weakening of tradition.

Science has its limits in guiding humanity out of the problems it is facing on different planes. Reason and rationality, though important advancements from the darker ages of blind faith, aren’t giving clear direction to life and humans any more.

Direct human relationships and contact, which even more important as the collective cultural messages in forming the ego, are more and more mediated by the Internet, where “friendships” can be established and ended by a simple mouse click and where personal profiles, human connections and the sites themselves can change, born and die capriciously. With this instability it becomes difficult to develop a deep relationships in time which allows knowing ourselves deeper through others and individuates our personalities. For instance, a research article states that 50 percent of foster kids are on psychiatric medications, telling us something about the need of a long-term real human connection for the development of a healthy psychic structure.

And saying that family guidance has become less important than in the past is obvious. Kids get their inputs more from peers, TV, pop culture and the Internet, which doesn’t give a strong and consistent direction for the formation of a personality, but a set of disconnected and contradictory inputs.

Without the strong references of ideologies, religions, science and human relationships, even the construction of an ego, the fifth body in the esoteric tradition, does not follow a linear process any more.

Through the electronic media and television, we are stimulated daily by contradicting messages, in a non-linear way, differently from the media culture of the press. TV started this attitude and the Internet completed it. We often make a contraposition between TV and the Internet on the basis that while the former is broadcasted, the latter is mostly user-generated and allows the freedom to choose our path through information. But the way of fruition in both cases is non-linear. TV has cuts, edits, quick changes of context and jumps from one subject to another with no real connection or narrative between pieces. We view disconnected bits of information. The Internet, even though it has links which give an appearance of connection and structure, has a non-linear and scattered narrative, where most of the time links don’t connect the discourse in a larger and deeper narrative, but mainly diverge attention, pointing to something which doesn’t blend with the original discourse or contribute to designing a bigger picture.

Of course, I don’t undervalue the importance of having different paths which direct one to something unrelated and unexpected. But as much as links point to varied and captivating material, they lack consistency.

The path of spiritual practitioners goes in the direction of getting rid of the heavy conditionings in order to reach states unknown to the ego, free from limitations (though an ego is needed in order to jump beyond it).
The printing press culture supported not only a new process of cognition, but the ego itself came to be defined in a structured and linear way. In the post-printing press culture, the ego personality is becoming less structured, induced by the non-linear and fast Internet technology.

The stage of history where Western man was straightforward is definitely gone. As we deal with many windows on a computer screen, all competing for our attention, we are split in several fluid personalities without clear direction and with a director which keeps them together without a strong center of conscience.

If this historical tendency is toward a collective loosening of the structures of the ego through media and technologies, how about individual people’s psyches? Can people jump on the sixth body level, beyond the conceptual mind, bypassing the fifth and the construction of a stable ego? What is going to be left from the desegregation of the ego? Will a superior entity take charge of the psyche, or will this just slip into a state preceding the formation of the ego, collapsing into psychosis?

Or are we witnessing a mutation of the psyches where the traditional ego formation doesn’t happen anymore through the same path? Can the solid formation of the ego be bypassed without harm? The Internet, since the beginning, was considered as a technology which could crumble central governments and the one-to-many broadcasting  models in the media, politics, and economy. Perhaps that forecast was an external projection of something that would take place in our inner lives, disjointing the strength of central ego organization in our psyche.

The media and technology are reshaping our psyche in ways that we still don’t really have a clue about. And probably we are too distracted and busy following the next link to care.

The Psychology of the Esoteric (Cologne: Rebel Publishing House):
