For many of us technology has become -the- religion. God died and science took its place. Technology can save us (partially) from physical and psychological suffering and provide us some comfort. But it does not give us a purpose in life or any promise of a better after-life. In the end the "religion of science" offers us a very nihilistic view and the (negative) results can be observed in today's society. I do not think that the "regular" religions would do any better, by the way. As far as I am concerned the only hope to overcome this nihilism lies in the individual rising to the occasion by taking responsibility and shaping his/her own values. But I do not expect this to happen on a large scale anywhere soon.

“Jesus comes victoriuos out of the battle against Satan: against the false divinization of power and wealth, against the false promise of a future that should guarantee everything to everybody through power and economy, He has opposed the divine nature of God”

The temptations of Jesus, Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph Ratzinger
