One last thing. There is a lot of stuff in this post that fits in the definition of "cognitive dissonance":
"The theory suggests that conflicts between behavior and beliefs create a sense of discomfort, or cognitive dissonance, that the individual subconsciously attempts to eliminate by modifying his or her beliefs."

It's a particularly hard question to think of. As you've stated, we can fall in the sea of information only to try to attach us more strongly to what we know already - because it's easier and novelty can be scary, destabilizing. But, for someone who want to truly dig deep, it can happen too.
I can give you my example, and I hope I'm not an exception :
In 1998, a friend try to make me discover a kind of music I was not even thinking of (electronic music). After some exchange, I was curious and so I begin to try to find more, and more, and more... I could have done it with traditional means of course, but the net got me the advantage of speed, and the pleasure of navigating a web of knowledge about this music - interview, meeting some new people, getting in contact with some obscure label... But as you've said, I was not wandering without curiosity, au contraire.
I've followed a similar path to learn to play the guitar - getting lesson from (at the time) obscure teacher, reading a lot on it, meeting people...
Some years later, I've discovered on blogs some fragment from the Zen philosophy. I was curious, so I've dig, nearly the same way. It got me here, and to read books on the subject.

So yes, I you have the curiosity and the courage to, the web can broaden your minds. But it's a conscious process, a decision everyone as to make for himself.
