Consapevolezza delle emozioni e dipendenza da Internet
Awareness of feelings and Internet addiction

CyberPsychology & Behavior has presented a study entitled “Alexithymia and Its Relationships with Dissociative Experiences and Internet Addiction in a Nonclinical Sample.”
Alexithymia causes difficulty in understanding, differentiating and communicating emotional states. It is not considered a clinical condition, but a personality trait, shared among more or less 7% of the population, with a slightly greater prevalence of males. The term is relatively recent, being coined by Peter Sifneos in 1973. The subjects usually lack imagination, have little intuition and scarce introspective capacities. One of the predominant characteristics on the relationship level is a limited capacity of having emotional connections with people since they are not able to see both in themselves and in others the shades of emotion, but just obvious ones of “feeling good” or “bad.”
As often happens in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, interpretations of the causes for alexithymia are divided between those who consider the genetic and neurochemical factors as predominant, and those who think that the reasons are to be searched for in psychological factors (for example, too-intensive emotional experiences which lead to defending oneself from them, or lack of recognition of the son’s or daughter’s emotions by the parent).
Another characteristic of alexithymics is an attenuated capacity of controlling their impulses, so much so that some of them discharge the tension caused by the unpleasant inner states by compulsive acts, such as abusing food or substances, or through distorted sexual behavior.
The authors of the study (Domenico De Berardis, Alessandro D’Albenzio, Francesco Gambi, Gianna Sepede, Alessandro Valchera, Chiara M. Conti, Mario Fulcheri, Marilde Cavuto, Carla Ortolani, Rosa Maria Salerno, and Nicola Serroni e Filippo Maria Ferro) worked on a sample of 312 students, identifying the factors associated with the risks of developing Internet addiction.
It was noticed that alexithymics had more dissociative experiences, less self-esteem, more obsessive-compulsive troubles, and greater potential of developing Internet addiction. In particular, the study has pointed out that the difficulty in identifying emotions is associated in a significant way with an elevated risk of developing Internet addiction.
This study demonstrates the association between an emotionally impoverished world and Internet addiction. Even if it was not an objective of the study, I think that the addiction could also take place through other media like TV or various gadgets present in our lives. Addiction to technologies and emotional impoverishment are, in my opinion, codependent. If it is true that alexithymia promotes addiction, excessive use of technologies in its turn leads us to a “second-hand” emotional life and a disconnection from the place where the emotions get activated, recognized and mature, which is the body and live relationships.
An incapacity of identifying emotions means a major risk of addiction. This makes me observe that lack of awareness of our emotions (and of the inner life in general) leads us to acting mechanically and becoming servomechanisms of technology.
If we do not understand what we feel, don’t listen to ourselves, consequently we’ll not get to know ourselves, and our lives will depend on external stimuli, which will trap us repeatedly. Therefore, our identities will depend on external inputs, since we’ll not have any other identity, apart from the one which is mirrored in the Net.
The awareness of our feelings is an embodied process as much as a mental one, while using the Internet limits us to a mental sphere which takes us away from the connection with the body, taking the awareness of feelings even farther away.
An alexithymic’s limited introspective life is a condition which is replicated in everybody who lives in a continuous flow of information, paying attention only to the inputs which come from the outside. The internal life and capacities for introspection become more and more impoverished, and it becomes more difficult to transfer attention from the external to the internal. A conscious effort is needed for “self-remembering,” to use a term dear to Gurdjieff.
Besides, the awareness of emotions prevents the dissociative experiences typical of alexithymics because it keeps our feet on the ground and “anchors” us to the body. Since ever, the best “technology” for expanding the awareness of our emotions – and not just that – is meditation, where the flow of information is only witnessed, made aware, and not acted upon. And not clicked.

Grazie molto interessante Ivo.
l’ottica e ho dovuto diventare non so nemmeno cosa….Un caro saluto anna
